M&M’s VJ Experience

Overview

This was a collaboration with Dreamboat and Condé Nast for Mars Inc. brand M&M’s at VidCon. It was an immersive interactive experience designed to transport participants to center stage in a moment as a star VJ, intuitively mixing the music and video of themselves while capturing selfies to share.

Contribution

I collaborated with Dreamboat to realize the interactive VJ mixing desk, designing a branded yet rugged bespoke class-compliant MIDI mixer, designing the furniture for fabrication, and making sure all the interactive details were right. This was accomplished using an iterative design process that ensured interactive details felt right and the mixer just worked.

Process: visual prompt to styled rugged hardware

The below images show the process of the rough visual prompt, to a looks-like prototype in mostly paper, to a works-like prototype in cardboard and electronics, to a CAD designed looks-like works-like final mixer milled out of aluminum, installed with electronics and styled. The final mixer is class-compliant MIDI so it can be plugged into to any MIDI compliant software and mapped to control any parameter in seconds.
